IBM is planning to build a 100,000 quantum bit (qubit) quantum computer in collaboration with the University of Tokyo and the University of Chicago. The development comes after the tech giant broke records with a 433-qubit processor at the end of last year. The firm has carried out original verification tests to demonstrate that complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology can be integrated circuits placed next to cold qubits, and controlled using very low amounts of power. The lack of existing technology means universities will play a key role in the development of quantum-centric supercomputing.
